THE US OPEN
The US Open is one of the four Grand Slam Tournaments and it is held annually over two weeks between late August and early September in New York, United States. It features men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles, mixed doubles, junior's championships, and wheelchair, legends and exhibition events. It is owned and organized by the USTA, which is the United States Tennis Association. The tournament has tie-breaks in every set, including the last set. The surface used in the courts is a hard court surface called decoturf, which has slightly less friction and produces a lower bounce compared to other hard courts. Because of its' fast-playing surface, it generally is considered as the best tennis tournament for many serve-and-volley players to be successful.
The first tennis tournament was held on the grass courts of Newport, Rhode Island in 1881. It became known as the US National Championships and it got its' official title, which is the US Open, in 1968. At the beginning, it was only for clubs that were members of the United States National Lawn Tennis Association (USNLTA). In 1915, the tournament was relocated to the West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills, New York. In 1978, the tournament moved to its' current location: USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows. In 1997, the centre court got the name of the tennis player who won men's final of the US Open in 1968: Arthur Ashe Stadium.
