The australian open
The Australian Open is one of the four Grand Slam Tournaments and it is held annually over the last fortnight of January in Melbourne, Australia. It features men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles, mixed doubles, junior's championships, and wheelchair, legends and exhibition events. The most used surface was grass, but two types of hard court surfaces became more common in last years: rebound ace and plexicushion.
The first tennis match of the tournament was played on the lawns of the Warehouseman's Cricket Club in 1905. In 1927, the tournament became known as the Australian Championships and it got its' official title, which is the Australian Open, in 1969. Since 1905, the tournament has been staged in following cities: Melbourne (55 times), Sydney (17 times), Adelaide (14 times), Brisbane (7 times), Perth (3 times), Christchurch (1 time) and Hastings (1 time). In 1988, the tournament started to take place in its' current place, which is Melbourne Park and the attendance increased almost twice. In 2000, the centre court got the name of the Australian tennis legend: Rod Laver Arena.
